DEF CON water-utility security project adds providers and expands digital-twin and AI capabilities
A DEF CON-linked effort focused on protecting water utilities, referred to as the Franklin project, has added new security providers and is using digital twins and AI to strengthen testing and defense work. The update suggests the project is broadening the technical and organizational support behind cybersecurity exercises for critical infrastructure.
Why it matters: Cybersecurity projects for water systems matter because utilities are part of critical infrastructure with uneven defensive resources and growing exposure to digital attacks. Adding more providers and simulation capabilities could improve how operators test threats, coordinate vendors, and prepare defenses in a high-consequence sector.
