Illinois legislature passes AI safety bill requiring third-party compliance checks

Illinois lawmakers have passed an AI safety bill that would require companies including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google to have independent third parties verify compliance with safety standards. Governor JB Pritzker has said he will sign the measure, which Wired described as one of the strongest state-level AI safety laws in the US.
